& Topography of Henstridge in Somerset.
A Village in the hundred
of Horethorne, County of Somerset, 7 miles S. W. from Wincanton, 10 W.
from Shaftesbury, and 1 N. from Stalbridge. The first tobacco used in
England it is said was at the 'Virginia' or 'Old Ash' Inn in this place;
it was here that the ludicrous joke occurred to Sir Walter Raleigh who
was smoking in the parlour when the waiteron entering the room imagining
him on fire ran for a bucket of water which on his return he threw over
him. The church (St. Nicholas) is an ancient fabric having a small ivy
mantled tower, the sacred ediface contains several handsome monuments.
The parish comprises 4228 acres, and had in 1841, 1146 inhabitants. Post
