A large and respectable village, surrounded by an extensive parish, and situated on the gentle
slope of the ridge which bounds the vale of the river Cale on the west. It has North Cheriton on the north, the river Cale on the east, Abbas Coombe on the south, and Stowell and Charlton Horethorne on the west, and is richly wooded, with elm, oak and other trees, which attain a large size. There is little variety of surface, yet it's character is of a pleasing description. The upland portion is chiefly under arable culture, and the lower, called Horsington Marsh, is a fine tract of pasture and meadow land, almost exclusively fed by cows. Some fine orchards surround the village, which is 4 miles on the south west of Wincanton, on the line of turnpike road leading from Castle Cary to Stalbridge, and into the vale of Blackmore. It contains the following hamlets:
1. Horsington Marsh to the east.
2. South Cheriton, commonly called Cheriton, to the north.
3. Wilkenthorp, to the west.
4. Horwood, detached, to the east.

The church stands on the south side of the village, and is a modern edifice, except the lower stage of the tower and the chancel. The interior is in the Italian style, with circular headed windows, and neatly pewed, with a large gallery. The tower contains a clock and five bells....... Phelp's History of Somerset 1836
